By capturing snapshots of code and IDE interaction data, it allows to analyze the process of writing code in different languages - Python, Java, Kotlin, and C++. The first tool is a plugin for IntelliJ-based IDEs (P圜harm, IntelliJ IDEA, CLion). In this paper, we present a set of tools for collecting and processing data of student activity during problem-solving. Existing studies use records of students' actions in the IDE, consecutive code snapshots, compilation events, and others, to gain deep insight into the process of student programming. The process of writing code and use of features in an integrated development environment (IDE) is a fruitful source of data in computing education research. Taken together, visual representations designed in accordance with these guidelines stands to promote self-regulated learning in the domain of programming. Each design principle is exemplified in the context of student learning with an intelligent programming tutor designed to facilitate distinct phases of programming learning and task performance. These principles can be listed as follows: (1) signaling visual information with embedded cues (2) mapping verbal information to visual representations and (3) translating visual information from one representation to another. This chapter attempts to outline theoretical constructs from the perspective of self-regulated learning theory to derive instructional design principles. Although visual representations designed in accordance with how students process information stands to facilitate program comprehension during learning of complex topics, few studies have systematically investigated different modalities of representation grounded in theories of learning. Investigating visualization techniques to support student learning is a continuing concern within the computer science education community. This research project is well suited to an ITiCSE working group as the synthesis and discussion of the literature will benefit from input from a variety of researchers drawn from different backgrounds and countries. The working group will conduct a systematic literature review based on the guidelines proposed by Kitchenham et al. It is therefore timely to conduct and present such a review in order to gain an understanding of the research focuses, to highlight advances in knowledge since 2003, and to indicate possible future directions for research. There does not appear to have been a comprehensive review of research into introductory programming since that of Robins et al. Some notable areas that have not been reviewed are assessment, academic integrity, and novice student attitudes to programming.
